Indoor Gardening for Dummies

A few years ago, we were in the kitchen store in the Fargo mall. I spied an aero garden, basically an indoor hydroponic growing system, and examined it with interest.

I told Wesley that I would like to buy one. But, we were too busy that day to really check out the possibilities.

I forgot about my comment.

He didn’t.

This year for Christmas, Matthew & Wesley carefully picked out three Aero Garden units. One for Matthew, so he could grow catnip for his cats. Two for me, a little one for herbs, and a big one for lettuce or tomato plants.

So far, our crops have been an outstanding success. A couple of times a week, we harvest a delicious blend of lettuce, enough for two or three servings. The catnip is growing like a weed.

Wait, I think it is a weed. But, Matthew is happy because his catnip plants are much taller than my herbs or my lettuce.

And, my little herb garden is flourishing. Italian Parsley. Genovese Basil. And the Oregano was doing really good until the cats decided to eat it. They must have discriminating palates… they haven’t touched the catnip plants but they are eating my oregano.

Last week, I harvested the herbs, and made four little cups of savory fresh herb butter, using a recipe from Allrecipes.com (here). We’ve been enjoying it all week, on baked potatoes, French bread, whole grain toast… mmmm!

Herb Butter

2 cups butter, softened
1/4 cup minced fresh parsley
2 tablespoons minced garlic cloves
4 teaspoons Italian seasoning
1 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes

Mix together well. Store in fridge. Use the mini plastic Glad cups with lids to package the butter… they are the perfect size for a gift.

In addition to the fresh parsley, I also added some fresh basil from my garden, a few of the surviving oregano leaves. I accidentally used crushed cayenne rather than crushed red pepper flakes (I thought they were the same thing). The cayenne gave the butter a delicious spicy heat, but it might be too hot for some tastes. Next time, I’ll try the red pepper flakes.

Business File Tote… it helps if you read the pattern!

A couple of weeks ago, I wrote about the Business File Tote pattern (find it here):

This is a great pattern. With perfectly fine instructions. If you read them :)

I started this handy tote on a Sunday afternoon. With a deadline of having it done that evening, so Wesley could take it with him to his trunk show at the Black Hills Stock Show.

The steps are simple. Make a handy side pocket:

Create an outer bag (the bag is boxy, but when I folded it flat for the photo, the corners look angled. In “real life”, they are not angled, just square:

Create a nearly identical liner, with the SAME dimensions, except the BOTTOM seam is sewn at 1/4” rather than 1/2”. This is where I didn’t read the instructions. I sewed the side seams and the bottoms seams at 1/2” for the outer bag, and at 1/4” for the liner.

Assemble the bag, using a layer of canvas for interfacing. I used a sturdy Pellon that Wesley ordered for the floor mats.

Oops. My liner was 1/2” larger in all dimensions than my bag, and the Pellon was so sturdy that I could not ease in anything. As a result, the faux binding that wraps around the upper edge was all lumpy, because the liner was just that much bigger than the outer bag. The liner was supposed to be 1/2” longer than the bag but the same width.

Crap. Other bad words.

It was 10:30 pm. My bag was nearly done. Unfortunately, it looked like it had been sewn by a Third Grader.

Enter my husband with a seam ripper. He ripped out the necessary seams, and by then it was nearly midnight.

We went to bed.

Rose finished the bag, according to pattern instructions. It is beautiful!

And useful.

Our employees made me feel much better. They said I did a very nice job picking out the fabric, and matching the prints to my file folders!

I share this story with you, not to discourage you from making this project. Just to state the obvious… it is very helpful to read the pattern instructions.

I just discovered it, and I LOVE it.

A fast new internet browser (like Internet Explorer, or Firefox), but sooo much better!

Then, sit down at your computer with a hot cup of coffee. Turn off the phone. Think about your favorite things, and tools you need to make your life easier.

Create a personalized iGoogle home page, using your favorite theme (I chose “Spring Flowers”), a variety of fun apps and tools, and some useful gadgets.

My tools? A calculator, a “To Do” list, a clock and a calendar.

My passions? A quilt photo app, inspirational quotes, and beautiful photography.

Add some news, some weather, and a wikipedia search bar. Perfect.

I particularly enjoyed the colorful labpixies options, found here.

Each one of the rectangles is like a little quilt block, you can rearrange them, stack them up (with the compound gadget), add and delete to your heart’s content.

See that empty area bottom middle? I can either rearrange the existing elements, or find new ones to fill in the space.

Try Google Chrome… It is fun, easy, and will transform the way you think about the internet. I promise.

A Blog Follower?

Hi . After today’s newsletter, I’ve had a couple of inquiries about how to become a blog follower.

Here’s a very basic explanation of how to do this:

1.) Look to the left column. Under "About our Family", you'll find a little button that says "Follow" with Google friend connect. Click on that button.

2.) You'll be taken to a page, where you are prompted to sign in, if you already have a twitter account, or a Google/Yahoo account.

3.) If you don't have such an account, there is a little area below that which says, "Create a New Google Account". Click on that, then enter your e-mail address, and a password. You don't enter any billing information, or much of anything personal, other than e-mail address and birthday... and you can certainly lie about your birthdate.

4.) A second page prompts you to create a screen name, and allows you to add an optional photo.

The end result... your screen name with optional photo shows up in the follower list. I can randomly select you as a Cabin Award winner and send you an e-mail without knowing any of your personal information. It’s up to you whether you follow publically, or privately… but I recommend following publically otherwise your screen name is not visible for Cabin Awards.

It's a means of communicating by e-mail without your e-mail address being posted on the internet.

Petite Gateau

“Petit Gâteau (in French, small cake; plural: Petits Gâteaux) is a dessert composed of a small chocolate cake with crunchy rind and mellow filling that is served hot with vanilla ice cream on a plate.

The dessert has been popularized in New York City restaurants in the 1990s. Nowadays variations of the cake/ice cream flavors have come to include fruits and even alcoholic beverages, such as whiskey This dessert has also been known to be made using crepes , in which case it is multiple crepes stacked on one another separated by some kind of filling such as warm jam or berries.”

Joanna Figueroa has captured the delicious goodness of these small cakes in a new pincushion pattern, Fig Tree Threads, Petite Gateau (FTQ #728) . Click here for pattern.

"These are really good enough to eat! A perfect way to play with your favorite charm pack, these yummy little goodies are just irresistible as gifts or for a special treat for yourself. Simple to construct and quick to sew, these perfect little "cakes" are app. 3 1/2" when finished. Great project for your sewing group or for a gift exchange."

She also promises that most people can’t make just one! Well, she’s sure right about that.

So far, I’m up to four pincushions. With no plans of stopping anytime soon.

The technique starts with two pieced pinwheels, and a strip of fabric for the gusset.

I like to cut my circles to size with the Olfa Rotary Circle cutter. Find it here. A very handy gadget… I use it a lot. It’s like a compass from a geometry set, with a sharp central point that secures into the cutting mat, a sliding adjustable ruler, and a sharp little rotary blade on the end.

Sewing involves a gusset technique. Pattern instructions are excellent, with many useful tips. Gusset strip is marked according to instructions, then pinned in place. When sewn, the project resembles a wrapped candy.

The pattern guides you through assembly, and a hole is left to allow stuffing. I like to use walnut shells, carefully filling the pincushion with a funnel.

Then, using a tip I learned from Miss Rosie, I stuff a tiny amount of Sweet Dreams stuffing into the hole, so the walnut shells don’t fall out as I stitch.

Almost done. Just needs “icing on the cake”: covered buttons to give a finished look.

Dritz Covered Button Kits: found here. I used the 7/8” size.

To make each covered button, you’ll use 5 items, from left to right, a plastic tool, the button back, a fabric circle (cut to size with the Olfa Rotary Circle Cutter, above), the button front, and a pusher.

Set the fabric circle, right side down, centered across the plastic tool. Then, set the button front in the middle, and push.

The front slips inside the tool, and the fabric wraps around it.

Then, the button back is set on top.

Then, push with the pusher until button back snaps into position.

Tada! A perfectly covered fabric button. It only takes a few seconds.

My finished Petite Gateau pincushions. Don’t you just love them?

The kittens started the project by being helpful (you know… lying on top of the sewing table, playing with thread, carrying buttons away then batting them around… the usual). But it was all too much for them, and they finished the afternoon with a nap.

Helping in the sewing room is hard work!

Atkinson Designs: Four Square Farmhouse

When I originally wrote about Terry Atkinson’s “Four Square Farmhouse” pattern, I considered the beautiful simplicity of the quilt pattern, and the stunning batik color combination.

To be honest, I didn’t think much about the pattern name. Until today.

Terry writes on the back of her pattern,

“Four square farmhouses, often called “Cornbelt Cubes”, became popular in America when a “Square Deal” was offered by president Teddy Roosevelt. These homes had simple, pleasing proportions- four main rooms on each floor, set two rooms deep by two rooms wide. These same dependable proportions are used in the “Four Square Farmhouse” block.

A quick search of “Google Images” turned up the following images:

Hmmm.. now I get it! I didn’t know homes of that style were called foursquares. If I remember to pay attention, Terry Atkinson always teaches me something.

And, then there’s Rose’s beautiful new quilt.

Start with a stack of beautiful batiks. Carefully chosen to vary in color and value, with a pleasing mixture of marbles and prints. Use contrasting pairs to highlight the beauty of every fabric.

The result?

Simply beautiful.

Quiltsmart Cell Phone Bag

I went into my sewing room with the goal of cleaning up the mess.

A couple of hours later, I left with three (yes, THREE) finished cell phone bags.

The place was still a mess… but I had three finished projects!

To start:

One package of Quiltsmart, pre-printed fusible interfacing (found here).

Includes (3) pre-printed interfacing panels, fusible velcro for 3 bags, and three cords (my package had two brown cords and one red, but I’m not sure if they are all the same). Current Price: $14.95.

This project is so fun and easy, you won’t believe it.

Interfacing panels look like this.

Rough-cut a single unit.

Fuse the interfacing to the wrong side of desired fabric, cut approximately 6” x width of fabric.

Trim on the dotted lines.

Fuse the velcro into position (clearly marked on interfacing). Not sure I’m crazy about this fusible velcro… I worry it will come loose.

Stitch cording into position (clearly marked on interfacing).

Fold the project as instructed. There’s sort of a triple fold technique, to create the flap, and two pockets.

When correctly folded, the bag looks like this. Stitch on solid lines as clearly marked, leaving a hole to turn right side out. The interfacing is marked with words like “START”, “STOP”, “LEAVE OPEN TO TURN”.

Then carefully turn the bag right-side out, and gently press. Top Stitch. Stitch a decorative button on the flap.

Ta-Da!

Two pockets, one for cards or a key, the other for the phone. Doesn’t look too bulky, or overstuffed with phone inside.

More fabric scraps. A little more time. Two more finished bags.

Flap can have rounded, or squared off corners. Bag on the left is my favorite. My two nieces will love these. I’d like to find a different button for the bag on the right. I think it needs more contrast. Maybe purple?

Hooray! I love these!

I am constantly amazed by the number of beautiful note cards, notepads, little books, and other “gifty” items that go out the door of our shop. Some items have a fabric or quilting theme. Others don’t.

I think the trend can be explained by a couple of common bonds, shared by most quilters. We like pretty things. And, we like to share them with others.

Our newest arrivals from Punch Studios are a perfect example.

Magnetic notepads, 100 pages per packet. The thicker strip on top is embellished with little jewels, and each page is printed with pretty detail. The pages are perforated, and tear away leaving the decorative strip across the top intact.

Why write a note on plain notepaper, when you could write on pretty paper?

Why file papers in a plain manila file folder, when you could use a beautiful folder?

I imagine a painter feels this way when she begins with a fresh canvas.

I imagine a chef feels this way when her knives are freshly sharpened.

I imagine an author feels this way when she starts a new book.

I know that quilters feel this way when we start new projects. I spend a lot of time with quilters, and speak with confidence.

The joy of a stack of beautiful new fabric on the cutting table… Breakfast at Tiffany’s by Joanna Figueroa. Jelly roll and background/accent fabric for Fig Tree Club, Year 2, Project 1, Twinkle Throw.

Fabric cut, and carefully sorted into stacks for the various blocks. I have to put my stacks in Ziploc baggies, as I know the rambunctious kittens will play as they help me sew.

As the first blocks emerge, my heart fills with a sense of accomplishment. Graceful pinwheels float on a creamy white background.

I love this pattern. Simple, pretty, and fresh. I’m making the larger size, 61” x 70”, and the blocks go together quickly. Some of the pinwheels spin the other way, some are on a creamy yellow dot background, and a few star blocks are scattered in for fun.

The overall experience… enchanting!

Mmmm… it’s quilting heaven.

Fig Tree Club at DCQ!

As we prepare to launch the second year of our Fig Tree Club at DCQ, we have opened up the club to new members.

Carry-over members from Year 1 will receive an e-mail soon, inviting them to specify size and backing options for Year 2: Project 1, “Twinkle Throw”.

New members are asked to join by November 30th, to be eligible for the “Welcoming Bonus Drawing”. Although Joanna does a great job guiding our local club along, with beautiful fabric collections, and inspired pattern designs, she encourages us to “make the club our own”.

Yesterday, I finished this “Mini Quilt Trio” project, using scraps left over from my first year’s club projects. The accomplishment inspired me… to inspire you!

As shop owners, we shop for fabric in a much different way. We are presented with fabric samples, either “on paper”, or “on cloth”, approximately 6 months before the merchandise is ready. We commonly shop for seasonal goods about a year before that season.

Faced with so many choices, it can be a daunting task. But, we know what we like, and hope that you like it too.

Some fabric companies do an especially nice job presenting their fabric to us. For example, this past spring, we were shown the following fabric cards:

Rose’s Runners

I just added a couple of new small kits to the website, using the beautiful “Let it Snow” batiks by Laundry Basket. Rose has been taking advantage of the chilly autumn weather to stitch shop samples, and just finished these two projects.

Rose’s version:

The technique?

Simply a quilt as you go strip quilt, with a little wider asymmetric border. But, what makes the runner special is the fusible applique accents at either end. Where Karen’s runner features Christmas Trees, Rose chose to apply fusible web to the back of two panel snowflakes, then fussy cut and applique the flakes in place. It was quick, easy, and the end result is simply beautiful.

The pattern? Designs to Share with You: Twister

The technique: 4 fat quarters, arranged in a pleasing fashion, to create a 3-D result. Notice how the runner seems to spin, and the square “rings” seem to interlock.

Rose’s first version of the runner didn’t look quite the way she wanted it to. See photo left (first version) compared to photo right (final version).

Although the spinning pinwheel design appears in both versions, and the same fabrics are used in both, the geometric 3-D effect is much more obvious in the final version.

Amazing, isn’t it? Fabric placement can really matter, even in simple designs like this.

Either one of these projects would look beautiful on your holiday table, especially with an elegant silver, white or crystal centerpiece. I found these at Crate & Barrel…. but it’s hard for me to imagine the scale. I think I need to look at Target. I love their Holiday stuff!

Vanilla Sour Cream Bread

We’ve had our bread machine for over five years, and use it sporadically. But, in the weeks before Christmas, it runs nearly non-stop, as we make dozens of loaves of bread for friends, family, co-workers, and teachers. Last year, we bought an identical second machine, so we could make two loaves simultaneously.

A warm loaf of bread, paired with a jar of homemade apple butter (click here)…. the perfect gift.

Although the bread machine came with a good instruction/recipe book, I really prefer the book shown in the photo right: “Betty Crockers’s Best Bread Machine Cookbook: The Goodness of Homemade Bread the Easy Way” It has great color pictures, step by step instructions, tips & tricks, and yummy recipes. We’ve tried lots of recipes from the book, but this one is my favorite:

Vanilla Sour Cream Bread

1 1/2 lb recipe (12 slices)		2 lb recipe (16 slices)
1/2 cup	water	2/3 cup
1 tablespoon	vanilla	1 1/2 tablespoons
1/3 cup	sour cream	1/3 cup
one	egg	one
1 tablespoon	butter, softened	1 tablespoon
3 cups	bread flour	4 cups
3 tablespoons	sugar	1/4 cup
1 1/4 teaspoons	salt	1 1/2 teaspoons
2 teaspoons	Yeast**	2 teaspoons

** May be Bread Machine or Quick Active Dry Yeast

Make: 1 1/2 pound recipe with bread machines that use 3 cups flour, or make 2 pound recipe with bread machines that use 4 cups flours

Measure carefully, placing all ingredients in bread machine pan in the order recommended by the manufacturer.

Select: Sweet or Basic/White cycle. Use Light crust color. Do not use delay cycles. Remove backed bread from pan, and cool on wire rack.

Good morning!

About two months ago, we lost our littlest house cat, Kittens the Mittens. We're really not sure how it happened, but we think she accidentally got outside, and then vanished without a trace. After endless hours searching the fields around our home, checking with neighbors, looking in town, and more... we had to tell Matthew that she must be in heaven. As you can imagine, we've shed a lot of tears.

Losing a pet to old age or illness is incredibly painful. Losing a pet under these circumstances is worse. The sadness and grief seems magnified by the uncertainty and the guilt.

With "Kitten" gone, Matthew considered a lot of offers for a replacement from friends and family. But, none of the kitties seemed quite right. That is, until he met "Suri & Ness" at the Oreo Animal Shelter/West Dakota Veterinary Clinic on Thursday after school.

These little bundles of soft fur and endless playfulness were abandoned in a boat by a stray mother cat in Dickinson. A litter of five, one of the kittens had a tail, and the other four did not, indicating the father was a Manx. Three females, two males. Jennifer, an employee at the clinic/shelter, devoted herself to bottle feeding and fostering the litter for the past six weeks, until the kitties were old enough to be adopted.

When the kittens were posted on the Petfinder website, and I learned their story from Jennifer, we decided to visit the shelter. We left with "Suri" and "Ness", re-christened "Stormy" & "Fluffy" by Matthew, two adorable Manx mix kittens, about six weeks old... healthy, playful, and oh so cute. Because they have no tails, they look a little off balance when they run, with a funny hopping gait that resembles a rabbit.

After a rocky start in life, "Stormy" and "Fluffy" have come to the right place... a home filled with fun, a happy little boy and other animals to play with, plenty of love in our hearts, and endless stacks of cozy quilts to snuggle up on.

Note: I had the easy job this morning, writing about their arrival. I assigned Wesley the task of taking pictures of them for the newsletter.... not so easy... they don't stand still for very long! I think he did a great job.

With appreciation to Oreo's animal rescue in Dickinson, and the Petfinder website, DCQ will send $2.00 for every online order during the next 24 hours. We'll be split the total equally between the two organizations.

Good Morning.

Well, we're all up early this morning, writing the newsletter together. All of us. Myself, Wesley, Matthew & the cats.

As Wesley & I were brainstorming this morning about a fun new promotion, Matthew overheard the conversation.

"What are you talking about?", he asked earnestly.

"The newsletter. We need a fun way to celebrate the seventh anniversary for the website," Wesley explained.

"Oh," Matthew replied.

He vanished into his bedroom, and the cats Abbie & Aimee followed him. A few minutes later, he reappeared, bug net in hand, stuffed with bits of colored paper.

"Abbie and I figured it out!", he exclaimed. "We can have a drawing! For seven yards of fabric! We'll put the names in here, and at the end of the celebration, I'll pick them out."

Wesley & I looked at each other with amusement. Well, why not?

This spring, we posted a survey on the blog, and asked readers to pick their favorite market bag tote pattern.

As promised, I made a tote with one of the winning patterns:

Although it might not be obvious in the pattern photo, the directions call for piping.

Piping? I don’t do piping. I’ve never done piping…. Maybe I can skip that part….

Just in time to solve my piping dilemma, Clover notions released a clever new product, called “Wrap ‘N Fuse”, a new easy way to make custom piping. This new product is endorsed by Nancy Zieman, of “Sewing with Nancy” fame.

Well, it it’s good enough for Nancy, it must be good enough for me.

Turns out Nancy really knows her notions, as this stuff is great!

Available in two diameters, and two lengths (Click here) :

3/16” x 2.2 yards
3/16” x 6 yards
12/32” x 2.2 yards
12/32” x 6 yards

The “Purse Strings” pattern called for 7 yards of pre-packaged covered piping. So, I needed a small package & a large package for the project : 2.2 yards + 6 yards, with a little left over…

Here’s how the piping accent was stitched into the bag handles.

Start with pre-measured bias strips, and the Wrap ‘N Fuse (3/16”).

Set the “Wrap ‘N Fuse” along the wrong side of the bias strip, aligning the piping cord in the center of the strip. Fold the strip over (WRAP), aligning the raw edges, and pin to the ironing board. The raw edges are at the bottom of the photo, and the pins are through the piping cord.

Using a warm, dry, iron, gently FUSE the raw edges together. Run the tip and edge of the iron up to but not over the piping cord.

Work on small segments at a time, smoothing any wrinkles with your fingers, and repositioning as needed.

Once the piping is made, align the raw edges of the piping with the raw edge of the RIGHT SIDE of fabric handle. Stitch in place, using a zipper foot to sew right along the edge of the piping cord.

Yes, you probably own a zipper foot. I didn’t know I did, but I was surprised to find one in my “tool box” of presser feet. I know it’s hard to see, but the needle is stitching thru the fabric right next to the left prong on the presser foot.

Repeat on opposite side of fabric handle strip.

Then, layer a second strip of handle fabric right sides together with the piece you just made. Pin the layers together, with the stitched size on top, so you can see your stitching line. Carefully sew on top of the previous stitching or just INSIDE it, to hide the first row of stitches.

Turn the handle right side out and “TA-DA”:

It’s beautiful!

The piping accent adds a lot, and I like the gathered pocket with elastic & a button loop. Sorry, no button yet… I’m still making up my mind.

I used the coated fabric for the bag body, durable twill for the bottom & handles, and regular weight cotton for the accent & lining. Click here for the Moda Freebird collection by Momo.

Here’s the supply list for the pattern:

3/8 yard outer bag fabric
1/4 yard contrasting lower band fabric
1/2 yard contrasting lining fabric
1/2 yard contrasting handle fabric
3/8 yard contrasting pocket fabric
1/8 yard contrasting binding fabric for top of tote
7 yards pre-packaged covered piping
1/4 yard 1/2” wide elastic
3/4 yard 22” wide fusible woven interfacing (example: Form Flex) for back of outer bag
1/2 yard 15”-22” wide sturdy interfacing for back of lower band (example: Stitch N Shape by Floriani or Timtex)
1/2 yard fusible knit interfacing for back of lining (example: Fusi Knit)
1” or larger button for pocket.

A note about the interfacing:

The above recommendations assume you are using regular weight cotton quilting fabric. I wasn’t, therefore my interfacing requirements were different. I didn’t use any interfacing for the back of the coated fabric. It is stiff enough without it, plus you can’t iron it or it will melt. It does finger press nicely, and my sewing machine had no trouble stitching through the layers. Also, twill doesn’t need a sturdy interfacing, as it is a heavier weight cotton fabric with more body. I backed the twill with a soft non-woven fusible, so it had shape without too much bulk.

It’s Coffee Time!

Start with a stack of beautiful batiks, for inspiration.

Create a stunning watercolor painting. Designed by Sonja Taylor, well-known South Dakota watercolor artist.

Adapt the painting, make a quilt. Write a pattern. Melinda Snell, accomplished quilter from Bismarck, ND, makes it seem easy.

Make a second version of the quilt, using new Hoffman batiks (not yet available). This version of the quilt was featured in the Hoffman booth at Spring Quilt Market, 2010.

And, make a third quilt, alternate colorway:

As you can see, the talented duo of Sonja Taylor & Melinda Snell have been keeping busy. A third quilt is well on it’s way to completion. Hint: we’ve seen it, it’s stunningly beautiful, and if you go to the Hill City quilt show this fall , you can see it too!

“Coffee Time” follows the success of their first collaborative project, “Sunflower.”

Melinda writes,

"I don't know about you; but coffee gets my "motor" running in the morning-come to think of it, I've never been a good morning person and coffee is the fuel that starts my day! If you feel the same way-this quilt needs to be yours.

South Dakota artist Sonja Taylor created the original watercolor painting of "Coffee Time" as tribute to this early morning ritual which stretches into mid-morning, lunchtime, afternoon breaks.... well you get the idea-there's always time to enjoy a good cup of coffee! After completing her watercolor Sonja knew "Coffee Time" had to become a quilt-that's where I come in...

I'm Melinda Snell... the quilter who converts Sonja's beautiful watercolors into quilts and quilting patterns- lucky me! "Coffee Time" is our second pattern which features fusible applique and threadwork. If you like what you see, check out our first pattern called "Sunflower Patterns." Zippers Are No Big Deal!

~~~~~~~Cash & Carry ~~~~ ~~~~~~~Zippy Strippy ~~~~~ Atkinson Design Zippers~

Class Description:

Zippers are no big deal! Using an easy technique developed by Terry Atkinson, stitchers will make at least one small “Cash & Carry” pouch and one larger “Zippy Strippy” bag. It’s a fun & easy class for sewers of all levels. Express your creativity!

Supply List:

Each student will need to purchase a copy of both patterns: “Cash & Carry”, and “Zippy Strippy”. We’ll bring plenty of patterns with us to class. Cost $8.00 per pattern.
If you have scraps of fusible fleece, bring them along. Otherwise, we’ll bring plenty of Pellon 987F, a lighter weight fusible fleece. Cost $7.50 per yard.
Flexible plastic/polyester zippers in a color to compliment your chosen fabrics. We’ll bring a rainbow of colors (see photo right). Cost $1.00 per zipper. Or, buy a complete set of zippers (36 colors in all) for $31.50.
Assorted cotton fabrics, fat quarters, fat eighths, 2 1/2” strips, 1 ½” strips, 5” charm squares…. Pretty much anything goes! You’ll want to have a few larger pieces (example: 2 fat quarters), for lining the little bags. Otherwise, we can make most any “scrap pile” work. Bring pairs of fat quarters that complement each other nicely, or your scrap bag of remnants from a finished project. You don’t need a lot of fabric to make each bag, but once you get started you won’t want to quit!
Optional: bring funky buttons, coordinating ric-rack or trim. Also, if you’d like to bring any special items (i-Pod, Bible or paperback book, address book/day planner, sunglasses, etc.) bring it along and we’ll make a custom bag or case.
Standard quilting supplies: rotary cutter, all-purpose acrylic ruler, cutting mat. No special tools or rulers are necessary.
Thread: regular cotton thread is okay. But, it’s a little better to use Aurifil 28 weight (a heavier weight thread) because it is thicker/stronger. We’ll bring a variety of spools in neutral colors.

~ These are great patterns, the technique is fun, and it’s a great way to use up scraps or fabrics from your stash. We look forward to another fun day together!

Vintage Memories: Blocks 1 & 2

“Vintage Memories”, our newest Block of the Month, is now accepting members.

The quilt is designed by Sherri K. Falls, This & That Pattern Company, and features a variety of beautiful prints from the Martinique collection by Three Sisters for Moda

As we cut the kit for the first 2 blocks, I couldn’t resist bringing one home to get started. I plan to piece this quilt along with the club members, as a little treat to myself.

Here’s what I found in the first packet.

(2) individually wrapped patterns, Block 1 & Block 2

Generous fabric cuts for the first (2) blocks. All fabrics are either fat quarters or fat eighths, a joy to work with.

Fabrics for Block 1:

Cutting directions are organized, and neatly presented. You’ll make (2) of each block.

As I cut my fabrics, I loosely pin the stack of block elements:

Piecing directions are straightforward & well written. The blocks come together nicely. I do find that as I join complex elements, the block looks nicer & lays more flat if seams are pressed open.

Within a couple of hours, all four blocks are done.

12 1/2”. Visually interesting, with nice contrast and a crisp, pretty result.

These blocks look so elegant, a lovely combination of color and contrast. The coral red, grey, blue, and cream look very nice together.

I can’t wait to get started on the next packet.

Summertime Grill

Wesley & Matthew gave me a new gas grill for my birthday, and we’ve been experimenting with some new recipes. Here are a few of our favorites:

Balsamic Grilled Vegetables (Recipe from the Food Network)

Ingredients

1 medium yellow squash, sliced on bias
1 medium zucchini, sliced on bias
1 medium eggplant sliced into 1/2-inch thick circles (I omitted this… don’t like eggplant)
1 red onion, sliced in 1/2-inch thick circles
2 Roma tomatoes, sliced in 1/2 lengthwise (I used large cherry tomatoes)
1 red bell pepper, stemmed, seeded, and quartered
1 yellow bell pepper, stemmed, seeded, and quartered
2 portobello mushroom caps, gilled and peeled
3 green onions
Kosher salt
Freshly ground black pepper
1/2 cup extra-virgin olive oil
1/2 cup balsamic vinegar
I added about a teaspoon of herbs from the McCormick Italian Herb Seasoning Grinder, i think a sprinkle of Italian seasoning would also work.

Directions (modified by Laura)

Cut up all vegetables, and place in a one-gallon zip lock. Pour marinade over, and refrigerate until ready for grilling. Our vegetables actually filled two bags (one for today, one for tomorrow…. of course the veggies that soaked an extra day were best, but the bag prepared after about an hour was tasty too).

Pre-heat grill to high.

Place vegetables in a grilling wok or basket (example shown in these photos):

Grill for 10-15 minutes, stirring occasionally, until vegetables are tender, but not soft, and are evenly marked with grill marks. Enjoy!

Rock’s T-Bone Steaks (Courtesy of All Recipes.com, link here)

Ingredients

4 teaspoons salt, or to taste
2 teaspoons paprika
1 1/2 teaspoons ground black pepper
3/4 teaspoon onion powder
3/4 teaspoon garlic powder, or to taste
3/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper, or to taste
3/4 teaspoon ground coriander, or to taste
3/4 teaspoon ground turmeric, or to taste
4 (16 ounce) t-bone steaks, at room temperature. We actually used this rub on both beef t-bone steak, and buffalo ribeye.

Directions

Preheat an outdoor grill for high heat, and lightly oil the grate. Stir the salt, paprika, black pepper, onion powder, garlic powder, cayenne pepper, coriander, and turmeric together in a small bowl; set aside.
Rub the steaks on all sides with the seasoning mixture. Cook on the preheated grill to your desired degree of doneness, 3 to 3 1/2 minutes per side for medium-rare. An instant-read thermometer inserted into the center should read 130 degrees F (54 degrees C).

Grilled Corn

1.) Select nice sweet corn for grilling. It’s okay to peel away a little of the husk to peek at the rows.

2.) Trim the messy tip of husk/silk away with kitchen scissors, but do not remove the husks or try to open and peel away the corn silk. Some recipes said you had to do that, and others said you didn’t. I didn’t, and it worked out perfectly.

3.) Gently wash the husk-covered cobs in the kitchen sink, and then fill the sink with cool water. Soak the cobs for at least 2-3 hours, with some sort of a weight on top of them to keep them from floating. I used my grill basket… it was the right size in the sink, and heavy enough to keep the cobs under water.

4.) Drain the excess water out the tops and put them on a hot grill for approximately 30 minutes. Turn them every 5 minutes or so, using tongs.

5.) Expect that the husks will burn and some may catch on fire. Move the scorched pieces away. The corn will not burn, as long as it is moved/rotated, and it steams from the inside. Do not put directly on hot coals. Once the husks are mostly all blackened, and just a few layers remain, remove from grill, and husk. Careful, the cobs are hot! Most of the silk will easily come off with the husks. Just pick off the last few strands, cover with butter, salt, and pepper (if desired), and enjoy!

I. This & That Pattern Company: New Stitchery Patterns

Rose has been busy stitching lately, using a number of new patterns designed by “This & That”. Sherri K. Falls has branched out from her traditional piecing & appliqué, and added some delightful embroidered elements to her designs.

We especially like the fact that the projects are fun, quick, and easy to accomplish. Some other pattern designers incorporate embroidery into large (bed-sized) quilts, and this can seem a little overwhelming.

Sherri’s designs are smaller, more manageable, and as cute as could be!

Kits are ready for both of the projects shown, and include Cosmo embroidery floss, as well as appropriate embellishments (buttons or ric-rack). Click here for “Snow Much Fun” and here for “Poinsettia Pillow.”

The Women of Sari Bari

A few weeks ago, Ellen brought a Sari blanket to work. Her daughter Rachel had sent it to her. One of Rachel’s friends works for the “Sari Bari” company. We examined the blanket together. Really, it’s a quilt.

I didn’t think to take a picture of Ellen’s blanket, but this photo from the Sari Bari website shows an example.

Pieced in strips from recycled Saris, layered with batting, and carefully hand-quilted with sturdy thread. A little worn in places, with a weathered patina. Pretty colors, nice design, nothing fancy. Hmmm….

A visit to the Sari Bari website reveals this

The name “Sari Bari” comes from two symbols. A sari is the traditional clothing worn by women in India. Saris represent the essence of womanhood. In Bengali, the word bari means “house” or “home”. She’s from Strathroy, Ontario. I lived in both Goderich & Seaforth about 10 years ago. Just a quick trip down Hwy 21 along the scenic eastern shore of Lake Huron. We were nearly neighbours!

Fresh Cottons from Fig Tree… “Fresh Vintage” style

As most of you already know, I have “a thing” about Fig Tree.

I’ll admit, it took me a while to get to this point. When I first started quilting, I was a little bit skittish. Batiks one day, thirties prints the next. I couldn’t quite figure out what I loved, what I liked, and what I didn’t.

Then, it hit me like a ton of bricks. Or, more accurately, a great big stack of fabric bolts. Standing in Joanna Figueroa’s beautiful booth at Spring Quilt Market, I took it all in, and declared, “I am a Fig Tree girl.”

In retrospect, I should have known. We painted our entire house the color of milk chocolate, (aka “Brown Suede” in the Fresh Cotton palette):

My closet is filled with pretty pinks, corals, butter yellows and assorted sage greens.

“Just A Taste”: 12 Days of Christmas by Kate Spain

As a quilter, I would have loved to order the entire collection of prints from “Kate Spain’s” new 12 Days of Christmas group.

As a shop-owner, I sadly knew we didn’t have the room for the entire collection. Too many pretty fabrics, not enough space.

So, I treated myself to “just a taste”. Charm packs, background fabric, inner border, and outer border. I’m thinking this prints are a perfect fit for one of Miss Rosie’s delightful “Schnibbles” patterns, like “Scratch”, “Sunday Best”, or “Reveille”.

Sometimes, “just a taste” is the perfect answer.

Zippy Strippy, Cash & Carry, & Pockets to Go!

As mentioned in a previous post, I’ve dived into Terry Atkinson’s “Snip, Zip, & Go” headfirst… and I’m not sure when I’ll come up for air!

At the end of the previous post, I wrote, “I hope you have as much fun with this as I do…. I’m currently waiting for Wesley to come home from the shop with a complete zipper assortment for me to work with… I’ve got some sewing to do!”

He arrived, bag of zippers in hand… And then,

Wow! I might need an intervention. As I worked on one, I couldn’t wait to start the next.

Please note: in my excitement, I forgot to read the “Zippy Strippy” pattern instructions. Hard to believe, I know :)

Laurie-Ann gently pointed out that the larger bags are supposed to include a little pleat at the bottom, so that they “stand-up”. (See Terry’s pattern photo above… her bags angle in a little and have a bottom, and mine don’t). I can still add that if desired… or I can just make more bags!

First I made a couple of smaller “Cash ‘n’ Carry” wallets, using scraps from a Fig Tree quilt I’m working on. Lower pouch has a pocket, perfect for credit card or hotel room key card.

Then, the longer “Cash ‘n’ Carry” (perfect sized pouch for sunglasses or sewing supplies):

Then, an assortment of all three sizes of “Zippy Strippy”:

The pattern calls for scraps of 2.5” width… perfect for leftover jelly roll strips, or charm squares also work for the smallest size. But, I found Honey Bun strips (1.5”) worked well (top bag), or just fabric remnants (middle bag body is not scrappy).

These were made from an “Eva” charm pack, and scrap yardage. I think they need some decorative buttons.

Then, I made a pair for the Hospice of the Hills silent auction (used both patterns). The ric-rac was a fun touch:

Then, I made this set for my briefcase. Large bag for power cords & plug-ins. Smaller bag to hold my i-Pod. Used left-over honey-bun strips and added inner pockets to the pouch, to hold earphones & cord.

Finally, I tried the third pattern, “Pockets to Go”. Cube organizer shown here, and I’m nearly done with a coordinating “Long” organizer. I’ll add photos when able.

Although more work is involved in making the organizer than the little bags, every pattern is exceptionally well designed and written, making the process fun & easy.

Bonnie & Clyde

One of our favorite places to visit is Roger and Gayla’s ranch near Maurine, South Dakota. Gayla is Wesley’s sister, and the ranch is about 70 miles from us, Southeast down the Bixby road.

Roger, Gayla, and Tayton recently added five Clydesdales to their growing list of farm animals. And, two were pregnant! We’ve all been anxiously awaiting the arrival of the foals, and are excited that “Bonnie” and “Clyde” are finally here!

I know, I know… bad junior high home-ec flashbacks.

But, don’t stop reading. Terry Atkinson was a home-ec teacher before she was an amazing quilt designer. She’s a zipper expert. She breaks down the zipper technique into a fun, creative, process designed for success.

First, she makes it easy to buy the “right zipper,” in the “right color,” for the “right price!”

Available individually or buy a bundle that includes one of each.

Next, she designs three amazing patterns for the zippers. The patterns are well written, include excellent diagrams, and feature fun, useful projects, allowing you to express your creativity.

Finally, she teaches me (the shop owner/teacher), how to teach you. This afternoon, I prepared a demo binder for the basic “Cash & Carry” wallet according to Terry’s excellent instructions. It does help, after all, if I know what I’m doing too.

The basic steps in this little wallet are repeated for the other small bags, just with different dimensions, pockets, and trims or embellishment.

In an earlier blog entry, I confidently explained that we could make custom kits for most any of the “Whimsicals” patterns by Terri Degenkolb.

Many of you took advantage of the offer, and ordered kits from her previous books.

Snow on May Day

Good morning.

We're celebrating May Day in fine Dakota style.

Unfortunately, the little girls in town are not dancing around a maypole, wearing pretty gauzy white dresses. Our kids are wearing snow-pants and mittens.

I truly couldn't believe it yesterday morning, when Matthew excitedly looked out the window and announced it was snowing. I hoped he was joking. He wasn't.

There's really no accumulation, but a fine crystalline powder coats the earth. It's a good weekend to stay inside, make soup, and snuggle up under a cozy quilt with a good book.

That's what we did yesterday, and it was wonderful. Wesley made French Canadian split pea soup, using our Easter ham-bone, and we toasted home-made croutons for a hearty supper. Simple, but delicious.

I took responsibility for snuggling up under a cozy quilt with a good book, and by evening I was relaxed, energized, and excited about quilting. As a result, the blog has been updated, dozens of new items have been added to the website, and we're looking forward to another good week at the shop.

I've been faithfully following the blogs written by my favorite pattern & fabric designers, hoping for a hint of what we'll be seeing at quilt market. Spring Market is in Minneapolis this year, so we can drive, rather that fly. Without luggage limits or shipping to worry about, I'm sure we'll come home with our SUV packed with fun new merchandise.

Market is closely followed by the Rapid City Quilt show, June 11-13th, our biggest quilt show of the year. We'll come home, unpack, and open the doors wide for shoppers from the ND State Quilt Shop Hop, June 16-30. We're already getting ready for these events, and as soon as details are finalized, we'll be sure to let you know.

We're entering uncharted waters with the Statewide Shop Hop, as it will be our first time participating in such an event. But, it promises to be great fun, and we're so excited to meet shoppers from across the state. The Big Picture:

The State will be divided into two parts, approximately split by HWY 83: "East" and "West"

Shoppers are invited to hop from store to store with passports in hand, collecting stamps at each location.

At the conclusion of the event, completed passports will be collected, and drawings will occur.

Five $200 certificates available for visiting every shop in the state.

Four $100 certificates for visiting every "East" shop.

Four $100 certificates for visiting every "West" shop.

Participating shops will offer special projects, welcome packets, and more.

Individual quilt shops are organizing bus tours to facilitate travel. We heard Friday that at least two buses will be coming our direction from the East, and this prompted us to get busy. With help from our friend Cindy, we're planning a bus trip to head East, June 18-20, 2010. In the weeks to come, we'll finalize the schedule, cost, and route. In the meantime, mark the date on your calendar, and prepare to go hopping!

I'll be updating the blog with more specifics about the shop hop and bus trip as details are finalized. In the meantime, please e-mail us with questions.

Heather Mulder Peterson ~ At Home for the Holidays

It’s only natural that one of my favorite pattern designers, Heather Mulder Peterson, has designed my favorite holiday fabric collection for 2010.

Heather’s pattern company, Anka’s Treasures, has captivated my imagination for quite some time now. One of her books, “Favorite Quilts from Anka’s Treasures,” sits beside my sewing machine, and I reach for it whenever I’m in need of inspiration.

Last year, Heather was the featured teacher at the SDQG retreat in Huron, SD. Not only were the classes amazing, but her trunk show was excellent. We enjoyed meeting both Heather & Joel, and learning about her quilting story.

I’m also a frequent visitor on her website & blog. Both are simply excellent… beautiful quilts, tempting fabrics, and an obvious gift for decorating her home with a style I can only dream of.

Whimsicals: What’s inside the books?

But, nothing replaces the experience of standing in a quilt shop, touching the fabrics, admiring the sample quilts, and leafing through new pattern books. We try to include as much information as we can in our online product descriptions, but sometimes it helps to have a secondary photo.

Thanks to Terri Degenkolb, talented quilt designer, and author of the “Whimsicals” books and patterns, I’m able to show you these beautiful medley photos, detailing the projects featured in each of her books.

Ready for some color?

Good morning.

Across our region, signs of spring are gradually emerging. The snow is pretty much gone, and the ice on the lake is melted. Farmers are anxiously awaiting the day when the fields dry up enough to plant, and cattle ranchers are calving out their herds. The grass is coming up, and trees are emerging from dormancy.

Every day, Matthew checks the apple and pear saplings in our front yard for buds. "Nothing yet, Mom", he reports with discouragement.

"Someday soon, buddy," I promise. "It just has to get a little warmer."

Yesterday, people in town were busy working on their yards, cleaning up old grass and winter debris. The local farm & home supply store has their outdoor greenhouses up, ready for the first shipment of trees and plants. After a long winter, everyone is energized to move ahead and make the most of the growing season.

Just like the gardeners, quilters are energized by spring. The store has been especially busy with walk in traffic, as shoppers from near and far arrive in need of supplies. I can't count the number of times this week a customer has started a sentence with the words, "Well, I was cleaning out my sewing room, and..."

Usually, the shopper goes on to describe a "UFO", and just needs a little batting, some backing, or the perfect binding to bring their project to completion. Everybody feels good when we can find something that perfectly complements their creation. Occasionally, we just can't come up with anything. Local quilters whom have spent the winter cooped up inside, or have worked outside in the miserable weather conditions are ready for color! Colorful fabrics are food for their creative souls. Shoppers reach for the brightest batiks, over-saturated ombres, and vibrant florals. We nearly sold out of the colorful "Country Quilts" collection in a single weekend after the last newsletter! (No worries... it's been reordered.)

As a result, the arrival of the new "Freebird" collection by Momo was met with considerable excitement. In colors named "Geranium", "Melon", "Nest", "Grass", "Sky", "Vanilla", "Grape", and "Daffodil", these fun prints make me smile, and bring creative inspiration to my heart. I'm especially excited to combine the specialty fabrics and make a fun bag. I plan to use the "coated/laminated" for a water resistance outer layer, and the heavier weight "twill" for a durable lining. Click here to view the Freebird collection.

Among The Flowers

New this week, a small contemporary floral group designed by Laura Berringer, the new design director at Marcus Fabrics. The prints feature a “neutral palette of modern, home décor-inspired motifs.”

I was attracted to the charcoal and grey tones, and the large scale filigree. I can visualize making great bags, accent pillows, neutral throws, and beautiful gifts.

I’ve always loved the “Snail’s Trail” block, but have never made one. I’m pretty sure this quilt uses a layer cake from Fig Tree’s newest collection, “Fresh Cottons, but I don’t have the pattern in front of me, so I can’t be sure. The quilt would be equally pretty in “Martinique”, “Whimsy”, or any other pastel group. The block construction would also be a good project for the blog, as I’m certain it is easier than it looks!

The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly

Good morning.

Sorry for the late newsletter today, but things aren't quite going according to plan. The phrase "The good, the bad, and the ugly" sums it up nicely.

Easter Sunday morning, I broke my hand opening a heavy metal door. Needless to say, the bulky splint does nothing for my sewing ability. The good news... it was my left hand, I'm right-handed, my pain is now minimal, and my friendly occupational therapist made me a nice custom splint that can be removed so I can wash my hand. And type. (Okay, okay, she didn't recommend typing, but I think it's good exercise for my fingers).

Last night, as I was working on updating the website, I accidentally deleted a large portion of the online menu. The merchandise was still there, you just couldn't see it...
I said a few bad words, shed a few tears, and then got to work fixing my mistake. The good news... I worked most of the night restoring the data, and in the process cleaned up a lot of unnecessary and redundant categories. It was a painful process, and is not yet complete, but with a little polish I think it will be better than before.

That said, please e-mail me if you locate obvious errors as you browse the catalog (categories where they clearly don't belong... thread in the rulers, etc.)

Wesley is in Huron, SD, for the bi-annual SDQG retreat, and reports that things are going really well. He'll be home late tonight, and Matthew & I both looking forward to seeing him. Matthew is convinced that there are many things that Daddy does better than Mommy can, and to be honest, he is right.

In addition to our own shop samples, Wesley is traveling with a stack of beautiful quilts from Holly Taylor, including the "Season of Migration" throw shown in this image. Next weekend, Wesley & Laurie-Ann will be at the Swiftel Center in Brookings for the "April Showers bring Quilted Flowers" spring show. Wesley has entered some of his quilts in the show, and we'll have a vending booth full of beautiful merchandise. The show is open 9-5 on Saturday, and 10-4 on Sunday. Before the website crisis, I accomplished a lot in the online catalog. I spent Thursday & Friday at the shop, doing computer work, as our helpful staff measured & organized dozens of new "All or Nones", and rearranged the displays to make room for bolts & bolts of new spring arrivals. Essentially, we worked with a "Spring Cleaning" approach... tidy up the remnants, scrap piles, & orphan bolts, so the new arrivals can blossom & inspire.

Moving forward with spring in my step, a smile on my face, and my hand carefully protected to avoid any more freak accidents...

Whimsicals: Folk Art/Traditional with Warmth & Style

Hand dyed wool. Perle cotton & embroidery floss. Mixed textures. Traditional piecing, occasionally adorned with a touch of appliqué. Beautiful fabrics in soft, warm colors. Hardwood floors polished to a beautiful patina. Fresh baked bread with apple butter. When I think of “Whimsicals”, my quilter’s heart feels happy.

We welcomed the arrival of the new “Heart & Soul” collection by “Whimsicals” this week. This is our third collection from this amazing designer, Terri Degenkolb. Many shoppers enjoyed her previous “Choco-latte” and “Snow Wonderland” groups.

“Heart & Soul” is a delightful continuation of her design style, self described as “somewhere between Folk Art & Traditional”. I find her fabrics, books, and patterns beautifully cohesive and warm. Single bolts don’t “jump off the shelf & grab you”. But, when scrappy pieces are mixed, something magical happens. Whimsical projects appear gently aged or weathered. I cannot think of a better way to make a house look like a home.

I Think I’m in Love…

We’ve had our shop for about six and a half years now. During that time, I’ve fallen in love with a lot of fabrics. Sometimes, my infatuation is short-lived, as I can be a little fickle. Something new comes along, and my affection is re-directed.

But, the new Martinique fabrics are different. It was “Love at First Sight” when Eileen, our Moda rep, first pulled these exquisite prints out of her briefcase, and carefully arranged them on the table in front of me.

I fell hard & fast, and without hesitation. I ordered everything. All the prints, all the textured specialty pieces, all the chenille, the coated (laminates), and the pre-made market tote. All the cut goods. Everything.

If I didn’t think “people would talk”, I’d wrap myself up in these fabrics. I’d hang them from every window, drape them upon every wall… layer upon exquisite layer.

Martinique… A Caribbean Island… an overseas region of France… and one of the most beautiful places on earth.

Monkey Business

We have a couple of young “grandmas” working at the quilt shop, and a new “auntie”. They pay close attention to trends in baby decor, and reported that “monkeys are everywhere”!

A quick search of Target.com & Kohls.com confirms their report. Monkeys are everywhere. From stuffed animals to bathmats, to the sweetest “monkey-wear” and “monkey-gear”… Some of my favorites are shown above.

Wranglers Among Us

Currently on Display at the Rocky Mountain Quilt Museum, Golden, Colorado

This weekend our quilting path finds us in Fort Collins, Colorado. Even though I love the prairie, I do admit a little envy toward those fortunate individuals who live in the foothills where the prairie meets the mountains. They have such a scenic canvas in front of them during their everyday lives of just doing the mundane, like driving to work or going to the grocery store; I truly hope they have appreciation for their scenic back drop in their everyday lives, it must lift their spirits every night when they come home from work.

Matthew was excited as we trekked across four states, he constantly was studying the GPS to make sure we were on the right course. Friday night we stayed in Cheyenne, Wyoming. As we headed south yesterday, Laura wanted to read her book, giving me instructions to let her know if there was anything interesting to look at, she wanted to be sure not to miss anything. After being distracted by me for the first 25 minutes of reading, she set down her “nook” e-reader because the enduring scenery was just too beautiful to miss.

As we drove past the Anheuser-Busch plant, I spied some of the famous Clydesdales in the paddock, out for exercise. Matthew instantly wondered if Dick was there and if we could stop in and see him. (Dick was his favorite horse when we saw the Budweiser Clydesdales on tour at the Black Hills Stock Show last year.) We pulled in and toured the stables at the training facility, and visited the gift shop. Dick was on the road at a show, however we were able to see Dan, Serendipity, and Wheeler; young Clydesdales being trained for the hitch.

Passing on the distillery tour, for lack of motivation and time, we continued toward our more exciting destination: The Rocky Mountain Quilt Museum in Golden, Colorado. The exhibits changes four times annually. Shows range from historic to contemporary, traditional to art quilts, using many styles and techniques. Biennially they present an exhibit of quilts by men. “WRANGLER’S AMONG US: 10th Biennial Men’s Show:”

“Men make quilts, too, and their work continues to make a significant impact on the world of quilting. Quilts by Ricky Tims, David Taylor, Joe Cunningham, Carmon Slater, Scott Murkin, Edward Bostic, Richard Caro, Allen Tremain, and more will be on display. RMQM continues to showcase the fine quilt of men you know and men whose names you will be hearing.”

Sadly, I guess I have to confess, that my name falls under the category of “men whose names you will be hearing”. However brief my mention might be, I can officially say that my quilt enjoys the company of afore mentioned famous male quilters. Of extreme interest to myself was the Men's Round Robin, which also was part of the exhibit.

This year the featured quilter is Joe Cunningham, one of the afore mentioned ‘famous male quilters’. In a self bio Joe says, “Now I travel all over the country to perform my one-man musical, Joe the Quilter, and teach classes.” Joe will be giving a trunk show and performing his one-man musical during the luncheon. I can hardly wait.

Also featuring: SPECIAL EXHIBITS: ‘Montana Men Quilts & Local Men Quilters.’

What they failed to mention is that Dakota Cabin Quilts will be one of their vendors this year FEATURING: ‘yours truly’. (Since I am not famous I gotta grab the spotlight when I can!)

The Rites of Spring

Good Morning!

The snow is melting, and rain is in the forecast. We've officially entered our "season of mud", and both Sox & Matthew must meet inspection before coming in the house.

I've been hard at work at the most uncreative task imaginable... income tax preparation. I'm blessed that Laurie-Ann keeps our business records up to date and as organized as could be. But, both Wesley & myself need to supplement her files with our "stuff", so we've been working on that. The good news is that we're nearly done. Hooray! One of the best feelings in my world occurs on the day that Wesley & I deliver our completed records to our accountant's office up the street. We walk back to the quilt store in the sunshine, hand in hand, feeling like a huge weight has been lifted from our shoulders. For us, it's an important "Rite of Spring".

What I've been lacking in creativity, Wesley & Matthew have more than made up for. With Wesley's help, Matthew has completed his first Cub Scout Pinewood derby car, just in time for tonight's big race. Matthew found a design template on the internet, ordered special stickers & wheels, and spent a big part of the past week in the basement, carefully sanding, painting, and customizing his car. The process can best be described as "Two steps forward, one step back", with a few mishaps along the way. But, the project is done, and his sense of accomplishment is immeasurable.

Wesley was approached by the Pack & Den leaders to help the Cubs make a quilt, acknowledging and thanking the American Legion for their sponsorship of the Boy Scouts. With Rose's help, the quilt was finished yesterday, and I think it is really amazing. First, Wesley contacted the Boy Scouts of America head office, and obtained graphics for each of the scouting badges. He printed the images on "Printed Treasures" fabric sheets, and the Cubs colored the images at the last pack meeting. Then, he used a variety of prints from the Robert Kaufman "Boy Scouts of America" collection to frame the patches into a cohesive design. Rose brought the project to completion, expertly quilting, binding, and adding a hanging sleeve. We still need to come up with a creative label for the back, and then the quilt will be placed on display at the American Legion, or in the Boy Scout area at the Dakota Buttes museum.

I also need to thank Rose for stitching Matthew's patches to his uniform. The poor child was wearing a Cub uniform with safety pins holding the badges in place. It's a pity his mother doesn't know how to sew :) !!!

Unfortunately, I'm unlikely to visit any of these beautiful gardens this spring. I am going to make a list, and make a point of seeking them out during our travels.
